~ $ Day One : Kali Linux Terminal Commands

Hey everyone!

Thanks for checking in and thanks to everyone who let me know on Instagram that they would appreciate this series and that they would follow along!

Today was day one of my pen-testing course. If you had no clue I was taking a pen-testing course I’ve got a blog post that dives into all of that which you can read by clicking here…

Today’s Objectives

• Discuss note taking with Keep Note and why keeping notes is vitally important as a penetration tester

• Work with a few basic commands in the terminal

Keep Note & Note Taking

Why is note keeping so important?

Well when you’re working with a company – you’ll need to report your findings and be able to answer any questions they may have for you. Having notes on hand will help you to put together a solid report and build on new ways to test other systems in the future.

I worked with Keep Note. KeepNote is super easy to use. I had no clue why I couldn’t populate a note at first but it was simply because I hadn’t created a notebook yet. Oops.

Here’s what KeepNote looks like post install:

Here’s what KeepNote looks like when creating a new notebook:

Here’s how to create a new page in that notebook:

That’s supposed to say hashes. Clearly I can’t spell LOL.

Basic Linux Commands

The first thing I did upon entering the terminal was change my root password. I forgot to grab a screen-snip of that (sorry) so here’s a video on how to do so from YouTube

Then we went on to work with the commands below. Admittedly, I did know how to use most of these BUT I can say it never hurts to review and as I am new to the pen-testing world … the dots on HOW I would use these to pen test are starting to click.

  • pwd
  • cd
  • cd ..
  • ls
  • ls -la
  • mkdir
  • rmdir
  • cp
  • rm
  • mv
  • locate
  • man

To close

I’m loving it. Course is super entertaining. Its very easy to keep up with and I’m excited to see where it goes.

Tomorrow we continue with commands and looking further into hidden files. Tomorrow’s post will have a lot more meat and potatoes so stick around.

Oh shoot! I forgot!

I added a new page to the blog called shop! Check it out. I currently just listed two products!
